‘The Constitution should be a work-in-progress’

The Constitution should be a work-in-progress. It must demonstrate practically that it safeguards the rights of each and every citizen.

Here are some of the responses via Facebook.

SA has one of the best Constitutions and an entrenched democratic framework and as a Zimbabwean I truly concur that SA will NEVER be like Zimbabwe. Keep shining as the true beacon of democracy in a continent so democratically dark! I truly hope Zimbabwe and other African countries can emulate the democracy!”

– Paul Mangwiro

The Constitution did not prevent us to be down graded to Junk Status….people do…this includes our own president who is solely responsible for this fiasco which directly will have a negative impact on the poor….so please don’t tell me that the Constitution will protect the poor…”

– Ben Jonker

The Constitution has failed us somewhat, notwithstanding it’s much acclaimed progressiveness, because, in hindsight, too much of power rests with President of the country.

I believe that the citizens of the Republic must elect the President, not the members of a political party.

The Constitution should be a work-in-progress. It must demonstrate practically that it safeguards the rights of each and every citizen.

Unfortunately, this is not what we are practically seeing in South Africa today.

We shouldn’t be required to go to Court to assert our rights, nor should there be a need for numerous and costly commissions of inquiry to find out what went wrong, after the fact.”

– Sada Moodley

Every country has a Constitution. South Africa has a very good Constitution and Zimbabwe has a very good Constitution BUT some people, some politicians may choose not to uphold or respect the Constitution. We have already seen that happening in South Africa. It may change for the better or for the worse.
